Security Cyber Geek

Mr. Tim Harmon is a cybersecurity and data science professional currently finishing up a Masters of Advanced Studies in Data Science & Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego). He holds a few advanced security credentials that include an Associate of ISC2 and the Cisco Certified Cybersecurity Associate certificate (formerly Cisco CyberOps Associate).

He is a member of Cisco's technical advocacy community, serving as a Cisco Insider Champion since 2016 and as a member of the Cisco Networking Academy Student Advisory Board. He helped the Cisco Network Operations Center (NOC) with deploying the Cisco Live conference's wireless network by participating in the Cisco Live Dream Team in 2015. He had organized and led cybersecurity Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions as hands-on training exercises, demonstrating his commitment to education and community engagement.

His community leadership extends far beyond Cisco programs, as he had served as Volunteer Coordinator for the BSides San Diego conference in 2022 & 2024, as well as Graphic Designer for the 2025 conference. With those roles, he recruited volunteers and managed the event design and branding to strengthen the conference community. Through these volunteer activities, he has supported local cybersecurity professionals by organizing events and resources.

Mr. Harmon is also a published author of technical blog posts on cybersecurity, data science, and networking. His articles appear on Cisco's Perspective blog and on his own blog site (Security Cyber Geek), where he shares insights and best practices with the broader tech community. He also started writing on Medium, where he shares information about his Data Science and Engineering program and correlates it to cybersecurity. Through these publications, he contributes to industry knowledge and supports peer learning in his areas of expertise.
